Where has the time gone? I had such great plans to knit lots of Christmas presents and here we are, only 15 sleeps to Christmas, and barely a gift completed. Luckily, I have a cunning plan………
I love historical drama and have recently been enjoying watching Outlander – the TV series inspired by the books of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. This series of books tell the story of Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse, who gets transported back to Scotland in 1743 and gets caught up in the Jacobite risings. In one of the early episodes, Claire wears this fabulous cowl:
This formed the basis of my cunning plan – if I knit with very thick yarn I can still get several gifts made in time for Christmas. This was actually started and finished in the same evening!
My Chunky Chunky Cowl is knitted with 2 strands of chunky wool held together on big needles – I used DY Choice Chunky with Wool and the cowl took 200g/260m. The yarn costs £3.25 for 100g.
Using 15mm needles and 2 strands of chunky wool held together, cast on 3osts.
Then work in garter stitch (every row knit) until you’ve got just enough yarn left to cast off and sew up (62 rows in my case but I’m a fairly tight knitter). Cast off and sew the cast on and cast off edges together. Fold the cowl in half lengthwise and it’s done. All you’ve got to do now is wrap it in some pretty paper unless you decide to keep it for yourself – in which case, take 2 strands of chunky yarn and start again!
Here is my version:
Happy knitting x
