Happy New Year to you all. In my final post of 2015 I told you of my intentions to start the Hue Shift Afghan and I’m delighted to report that progress is going well. The blanket is knitted in four parts and I’ve already finished the first section and am well on the way to completing the second section.
This is a the first section completed. I’m using Stylecraft Special DK and the five colours in this section are Emperor, Pomegranate, Lipstick, Spice and Gold. Mitred squares are a joy to knit and I love the fact that the different colour combinations in each square produce different shades.
I’m very relieved that I’m not knitting a gansey as one of the superstitions commonly held by gansey knitters was that, if a garment was not completed by midnight on New Year’s Eve of the year it was started, then it had to be unravelled and made into something else otherwise it would bring bad luck to the wearer. I fI had to unravel every project that I’d started in 2015 and not yet finished then I’d be spending all of this month unravelling rather than knitting!! As well as this blanket, I’ve got several works in progress including socks, a cardigan and another (crocheted) blanket.
Out with the old – in with the new. Last year’s unfinished projects do not hold the same allure as starting something new. Over the Christmas and New Year break we spent a lot of time driving to friends and relatives and, as the Hue Shift Afghan wasn’t the most portable of projects (well, it would have been ok but this provided an easy excuse) I knitted two other projects on the move. The first is the One Ball Baby Cardigan which is one of my go-to projects whenever I hear that a baby is due. The pattern is very simple and is ideal for using up an odd ball of sock yarn that you might have. I’ve made this one in West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply in Kingfisher and love the result:
My second project is a 3 colour cowl in Bergere de France Alaska. This is a quick knit just in time for the colder weather that is forecast for next week. I’m just checking the pattern and will publish it soon.
What new projects are you starting in 2016? Id love to know x
