Covid 19 has resulted in the cancellation of so many yarn shows this year but the magic of technology has enabled organisers to put on virtual shows instead. Where you may lose out on the ability to see and squish yarn ‘in the flesh’ there is the advantage of being able to browse lots of glorious yarns and get inspiration without even having to leave the comfort of your sofa!!

This Saturday (15th August) I’m excited to be taking part in a brand new virtual show: Leicestersinstayarnshow. This one day event features seven yarny people, all based in Leicestershire and Rutland. So let me tell you a little more about the magnificent seven:

Knit One Kits: Alison is responsible for getting this whole event off the ground. She created Knit One Kits last year after closing her Leicester-based yarn shop of 8 years. She’s always been a creative person, coming back to knitting after a long absence, and learning to crochet in the last few years. She puts great colour combinations of lovely yarns together with her own patterns to create knitting and crochet kits that she sells at yarn shows and from her website www.knitonekits.co.uk

Being Knitterly: Nicki and I first met in a knitting group way back in 2000 – long before either of us set up a yarny business. In normal times, NIcki runs knitting and crochet workshops as well as Stitching for Well-Being sessions. She also designs knitting and crochet patterns and has just published her book Fair Isle Knitting and Design. See this and her other designs at www.nickimerrall.co.uk

Burrow & Soar: Fran has been dyeing yarn since 2013. She stocks yarn and fibre from standard merino to bamboo, linen, cashmere and silk blends. As a lifelong knitter her aim is to dye the kind of yarn she’s like to buy and her yarns are exciting, practical and beautiful details check out www.burrowandsoar.co.uk

Debonnaire Yarns: Erica dyes the most luxurious yarns in a wide array of colours and bases plus original, easy knitting patterns to complement them. She also has an exclusive line of high quality silk yarns which are hand-crafted in India. See these and more at www.debonnaireyarns.com

Hummingbird Yarns: Kerry was a primary school teacher when she fell in love with hand-dyeing yarn. After illness forced her to give up teaching, she established Hummingbird Yarns in 2017. As a vegetarian and eco-conscious hand-dyer. Kerry focuses on yarns from small, well-run farms that operate on the basis of best practice in animal welfare. Norah George Yarns: Tracy has been producing artisan yarns on the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border. Her small, independent business is named after her grandmother and grandfather, Norah and George. She loves to experiment with dyeing techniques and learns more about her craft everyday. Find out more at www.norahgeorgeyarns.co.uk

Wool Zone; that’s me, Julie. As well as this website, I’ve got a lovely ‘bricks and mortar’ shop in the delightful market town of Oakham in Rutland, England’s smallest county. In pre-Covid days, I also take a selection of kits and yarn to about a dozen wool shows each year. I’m a life-long knitter (and now also dabble in crochet) and love the fact that my business gives me the perfect excuse to seek out quality yarns and interesting patterns. Oh, and to make up samples so that you can see what the finished item looks like (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it……).
